Frequently asked cake questions

Details on your cake, “baked by Brooke”…

All cakes will be presented on a cake-board, that is suitable to display your cake on and that will support the weight of your cake. It is always best to support the cake underneath the board when carrying it. Cakes are also in a box to protect them.
Cupcakes are displayed in a cupcake-box that has inserts for each individual cupcake. This will stop them from moving around during transport. The boxes are also quite classy (as far as cardboard goes!) and can often double as something to serve them from.

non-edible components

Tiered and specialty cakes often require internal support. This may be in the form of cake-dowels. Other non edible items may include pins for securing ribbon in place, or toothpicks. These pieces are all food-safe. If any of these are used within your cake, I will provide a list of items to remove when serving your cake. It is advised to pass this list on to anyone who will be serving your cake.

transport and storage

If you are collecting your cakes from me, please consider how you will transport and store your cake in advance. Carefully plan where your cake will be stored and them temperature of both the mode of transport and where the cake will be until it is served. You will need a flat surface in your car - so the floor is generally best. If the size of the cake means you need to place it on a seat, please bring a towel or similar, to place in the gap between your seat and the cake box, so it does not have to sit on an angle. I can provide non-skid matting if needed.
Hint - the seatbelts in my car have held many a cake-box-passenger and are very useful!

temperature

Very important!!! A cake is a sensitive creation! Even minutes in a warm car or room can be devastating to buttercream and chocolate pieces. Please ensure that your car is cool and where the cake is stored is a cool temperature. Unfortunately I cannot take responsibility for any melting that may occur. Once the cake leaves my hands or I have left it in the requested location, I cannot control its future!

the finishing touches

Do you need to organise candles, a knife or serviettes? There’s nothing worse than a birthday cake without cake without candles - except maybe hearing Happy Birthday sung out of tune!

Payments & Deposits

A deposit of 30% is required at the time of booking your cake, to secure the date. Full payment is requested 2 weeks prior to your event/cake day.

If your cake is booked with short notice, alternative arrangements can be made.

Deposits can be made to:

“Baked By Brooke”, Heritage Bank

Account: 14128640

BSB: 638060

(Please use your name as a reference and email me when the transfer has been made. You will receive a receipt via return email)

Cancellation Policy

As many parts of cake planning and creation are completed in the weeks, or even months leading up to your cake-day, not everything can be undone. A lot of love, time and significant investment may have already been put into your cake before you decide you need to cancel. Therefore, I do need to have a cancellation policy:

Within 3 weeks of cake day – Up to 50% refund of deposit.

Within 1 week of cake day – By this time, full payment will have been made and unfortunately, no refunds are possible.

finally, i love feedback!

Please let me know how much you enjoy your cake. Likewise, if there is something you'd like done differently next time, I'd love to hear from you! I often take photos of my cakes to display on Facebook and Instagram, but if you would prefer this not to happen, just let me know. (I DEFINITELY won’t put any pictures up until AFTER your event, so no surprises will be spoilt!)

Thank you and happy cake-day, whatever the occasion!

Brooke.
